Do You Have Relationship Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome, when it’s present in your entrepreneur life, may also appear in other areas too, like your relationships. It could be what’s sabotaging your partnerships, friendships, and romantic affairs. It’s been reported that around 70% of people have experienced imposter syndrome at some point in their careers and that at least 40% of people deal with it on a daily basis. This imposter phenomenon keeps you from asking for a raise because you don't’ feel worthy, it’s also the culprit that has you stay behind the scenes and never in the spotlight like giving a presentation or heading up a project -- because of the terrifying thought of “if they only knew the real me, I wouldn’t be here, really!”

Imposter syndrome in relationships takes a similar, but different form.

Here are a few examples:

  • Fear of not being good enough for your partner -- so your needs go unmet.
  • Having trust issues and fear of constantly losing them.
  • Needing endless reassurance that they actually care about you.
  • Only sharing the side of you that you believe they will like, hiding 90% of who you are.
  • You struggle to put your guard down.
  • Withholding your struggles because you don’t want to scare them away.
  • Reading too much into texts, messages, emails.

Those are just a few things to be on the lookout and yes, you might recognize a few of these inside your relationship habits -- don’t freak out just yet, you want to be cautious that what’s listed above are constant thoughts that are played on a loop in your mind that they cause you anxiety or any other ongoing discomfort.
