crush /kruhsh/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [kruhsh]
–noun
13. the act of crushing; state of being crushed.
14. a great crowd: a crush of shoppers.
15. Informal.
a. an intense but usually short-lived infatuation.
b. the object of such an infatuation: Who is your latest crush?
According to the dictionary a crush is an intense but usually short-lived infatuation. But according to the heart, a crush is a heart racing having found a vibrational match. So what do you do when you find that match in a random way--unexpected, at a birthday party, or standing in line waiting for your mocha latte?
In life we struggle to allow the right people, the right energy in our lives and suffer horrible consequences when we open the gates to our hearts by letting just anyone in. You know, the coworker who complains all day long, the nosey neighbor that's busy telling everybody's business, including yours when you're not around, and let's not forget the cranky mother-in-law who just won't accept that you really didn't mean to insult her "dry" stuffing that one Thanksgiving.
So when you're single and you meet someone that makes you blush, makes your heart race, and makes you think dirty thoughts--in a good way, what do you do? As humans we're told by the marketing executives at shoe companies to Just Do It and it's insinuated by condom companies that we should be "Ready for action, anytime anywhere" and if you drink sodas we're told to "Be a Pepper". Wait, that last one didn't really fit, but I was on a roll--don't judge!
When I met him about a year ago--nothing really stirred. Well, maybe the cheesy fries I had that night, but c'mon, it was in a group setting and it was a crowd of friends having fun in New York City. Fast-Forward to today; when I think of him I get butterflies and feel flushed, you know, like how Michael Jackson must have felt when pouring the Jesus juice--I guess that's what a crush is supposed to do to you. But do I have to act on it? (Someone should have explained that to John Phillips)
But I like the idea of him not really knowing and me not doing anything about it because it's fun and innocent and if I do verbalize it what will happen? We go out, maybe it works out, maybe it doesn't--but then the crush is over and there's no more butterflies. Why as humans do we always feel the need to "do something" about it? Do you have filthy back hair, Nair it. Have a booger while at a stop light? Pick it. Born with foreskin? Circumcise it. When will the madness stop?
Well I choose to take a stand on crushes and not do anything about it--except enjoy it and have my little fantasies at night that involve him, an Arabian costume and a rubber chicken (don't ask). The cost of lube alone is really costly, but it's a sacrifice I'm willing to endure. Oh, and another reason I won't do anything about it--he has a boyfriend who can beat me up.
How do you define a crush?
Have you ever had one and what did you do about it?
Special thanks to the Twitterers who played when I asked to define a crush:
@JujuMama A crush = a heart racing having found a vibrational match - the emotions signaling that this energy configuration is a good catch!
@secretplanet love crush, orange crush, girl crush: they're all delicious!
@TheLDP a "crush" could be defined as someone you lust after. Like someone you want to have but your reasons just don't have a strong ...
@JuliBee430 Feeling squeezed like an orange confident one drop of you would stir his soul & make him thirst for more
@summerkid18 a crush is when I have butterflies or smile from just seeing a picture of that person. With no reason why?
@AnnaKarimo Crush is simply admiration, dear.
@africankelli someone who makes my breath catch and my stomach flutter; it's been the same response since my first love in 3rd grade
@hotforsomething to me, a crush is someone you're physically and mentally attracted to. Plain and simple!
@bobmatnyc a crush is an unexamined attraction. :-)
