5 Red Flags to Look for When Hiring an Immigration Attorney

IMMIGRATION NEWS

Immigration reform is a hot topic in 2017 and having an immigration attorney on your side is everyone's hope. Having the best immigration lawyer on your case is everyone's dream. For German's green card case, I took to twitter and found our green card lawyer, Moumita Rahman, Attorney at Law, in New York City.

IT'S A HARD KNOCK LIFE

It's a difficult situation looking for an immigration attorney when you don't have a referral from someone you trust, and only rely on Goole and online reviews. Some of us don't know anyone who's going through or been through what we're experiencing and can't ask for a referral. Several people feel ashamed to be in this situation and keep things so private that you don't want to ask around for a referral--plus, there's always the fear of asking the wrong person.

DONALD TRUMP, OH ORANGE ONE

The views of immigration laws and reform have changed since Trump came into office and you want to make sure your immigration attorney knows current immigration laws and for our case, we wanted to hire someone who had dealt with Mexican immigration proceedings,

BAD BAD BAD BAD BOYS

I was careful in not hiring a Notario, I've heard bad things from people dealing with a Notario, we certainly avoided working with them.

Disclaimer: I'm sure there are people out there working with Notarios that are getting good advice and feel trust toward them--we wanted to work with someone who studied the law and could represent us should something arise.

We felt comfortable with Moumita and hired her on the spot. She was upfront and told us she had worked on green card cases but this would be her first same-sex marriage green card case. Fast forward to July 2017 and German received his green card and is now in his 3 year waiting period to apply for citizenship.

BIRTH OF A SERIES

We asked Moumita if she'd give some immigration attorney tips on video and when she whole-heartedly agreed-- we quickly put a series together based on our experience.

German came here illegally and his case was not a simple nor clear cut. We wish we had known these things before applying for a green card but we hope our experience can help those out there feeling desperate or like their case is hopeless.
