Following Your Passion feels like one big sugar rush, according to Katrina Kibben, Recruitment Marketing Consultant at Three Ears Media. Why is she comparing passion to eating three sticks of cotton candy? And why should you even care? Katrina did something many of us fantasize about — becoming our own boss! Not only does she love dogs, tweets like it’s her day job, she loves taking risks — her latest one might be her biggest yet. Katrina took the plunge and created her own recruitment marketing agency in February of 2018. What? That means she left the seat of security and swapped it out for the throne of the unknown–and she couldn’t be happier!
I switched companies about four months ago. I went from the everyday familiar (commute, colleagues, and conference rooms) to the unknown and the newness of it all. I’m the “new employee” encountering people’s smiles and helpful ways of making me feel at home, but there are a few things that only time will fix. You still struggle with your time sheets, the idea you presented wasn’t peppered with pom poms and cheers, and you can’t figure out how to scan your documents and e-mail them to yourself just yet. How do you deal with the new job struggles while not losing your mind in the process? Everyone’s struggle varies, but we all want to feel we belong and fit, especially if you’re spending the majority of your time, ideas and passion at this place. No worries, unpack your knick knacks, pour yourself a cup of joe and take notes.
If you’re on the hunt for a new job or maybe you’re just looking to add a few recruiters to your network –there is a way to approach recruiters that’ll make you stand out in a positive light and get our attention. I get so many people who just send me their resume with a note that reads, “What am I good for?” After getting that, I know what you’re NOT good for.
The publishing industry has mastered the art of how to send query letters to potential agents and publishing houses–and it’s the same with recruiters.
Aspiring authors just don’t send their book or manuscripts to an agent and say, “Take a read and let me know what’s up?” So why should your approach to a recruiter be any different? Do your research, find out what that recruiter handles (social, I.T., accounting, admin, etc) and if you’re profession and their industry match — reach out to them but make sure you have a job to discuss. Don’t just send your resume and ask, “What am I good for?” Do more research, visit their career website and see if their a role that matches your skill set and that way, when you reach out–you can touch on the job you’re interested in. This approach will create a dialogue between you and the recruiter.

So many times we think we’re unhappy at work because of various reason: your coworkers aren’t being fashionable enough, our bosses go on and on about their stock options and 401K packages that totally outshine yours, or the office politics keep you cowering in the elevator corner for fear of saying the wrong thing and being kicked out (SURVIVOR STLYE) of the cool kids club.
But Charlene and I have big news for you–despite all that business going on — it’s up to you to turn it around and create the job satisfaction you’re seeking.
In this episode of Recruiting Radio, we’re not encouraging you to switch jobs, change companies, or even try something new in terms of going Zen to deal with your colleagues, instead, we want you to understand the root of your work blues and empower you to make the internal change — that will really serve a purpose in your life + career.
In this Recruiting Radio podcast session, Charlene and I discuss the 5 ways to improve job satisfaction.
